Home Fragrance Safety for Families: A Room-by-Room Checklist

One practical household checklist for fragrance storage, pet spaces and children’s rooms.

Start with an inventory

List sprays, oils, diffusers, carpet powders and refills. Keep the original labels and photograph directions for easy reference. Mark each product’s intended use and storage location. Products without readable instructions need clarification before use.

Check shared spaces

In living areas, inspect open liquids and cords. In bedrooms, check bedside bottles and reachable drawers. In play areas, review floor treatments. In pet spaces, review bowls, bedding and climbable shelves. Add guests’ bags and travel products to the check.

Assign the everyday tasks

Choose who closes and stores bottles, who checks the room after cleaning, and who tells visiting caregivers about the plan. Do the check again when furniture moves, a child starts climbing or a new animal joins the home.

Keep the right help available

Ask your veterinarian or pediatrician about the actual formula and individual needs. U.S. Poison Control handles human exposures at 1-800-222-1222. For pets, contact your veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435. Emergency symptoms need immediate emergency care. Fragrance-free routines are a valid choice whenever suitability is uncertain.
